PROJECT: THE TENT BEFORE MOUNT BROMO
TYPE: COMPETITION
STATUS: UNBUILT
LOCATION: INDONESIA
YEAR: 2017

Mount Bromo – of four volcanic peaks sitting against the sea of sand. The constant smoke from within the crater reminds one of the still live and powerful force of nature at the tectonic boundaries between Asia and Australia. Yet even more astounding is that the flat lowlands of which these four peaks sit, the sea of sand – was the caldera of the ancient larger volcano of Mount Tengger. This ancient larger crater forms a natural bounding ridge and a plain of which the four and the most gracious peak of Mount Bromo becomes the subject.

Located close to the edge of the sea of sand, the design sits between the trail that hikers will travel across from the village towards the volcano, as the beginning and the end of the journey. Buried in the sand, one would descend in a long ramp towards a lower courtyard bounded by half height retaining walls. These low walls – built from local volcanic rock masonry forms the ledges and seats where one would sit against in appreciation of the endless horizontal plains. The gentle tent canvas roof – suspended above the walls recalls to the casual and temporary tent structures of the desert. Draped and stretched parallel to the panorama of Mount Bromo, the relatively low tent frames the constant view of the smoking volcano shared among the outdoor dining space.
